Septic isn't an alternate spelling of sceptic, it's Cockney rhyming slang for Americans "Septic Tank" = Yank.
I've only ever heard it used by Jeremy Clarkson, and then subsequently by people on Pistonheads, who presumably find it amusing and don't realise that Clarkson is satirising them.
