My understanding is that it's because abrasive particles tend to embed themselves into the soft material, where they are held firmly and thus able to wear away at the harder surface.


This was My experience with Devol bushes. Probably Vesconite does the same. I use grease seals in the bottom SKF 9815 installed upside down. Easier to install and keeps grit out. Should use gaiters also.
