There are holes in the cam pulleys and crankshaft pulley that must be aligned with the holes drilled into the crankcase behind them. Once they're aligned and locked in place then it makes it possible to put on the cam belt exactly where it needs to be.

I was at a biker shop for this so we snagged some 3/16" drill bits for the job.

For lining up the crank we put the car in gear and moved it until the dowel could be placed.
