It does still represent a shocking waste of raw materials, I am sad that they cannot just be re-rated and sold at a discount so they see out their life for someone even if it is less efficient.
These cars are unsaleable in America, even if they could be made legal. Most Americans hate diesel cars anyway, and ironically most of the 500,000 "Clean Diesel" buyers were environmentally-minded people who thought they were reducing CO2 emmissions by driving these frauds. They feel betrayed by VW.
My daughter is one of these people, and she will be returning her 2014 VW in April. In addition to her disgust at VW, she discovered that many gas stations are discontinuing diesel sales. Last month we nearly ran out of fuel inside the Beltway because three of the four stations had quit selling diesel.
In the article there is the hint that VW plans to export many of these cars, probably to hapless South Americans.
