You had to open the trunk to access the gas filler up front. In the later models they had a little filler door in the hood.
I had a '65 Hillman Imp with similar arrangement. Over fill it & you had petrol on your luggage or it got wet if raining.
I had the Singer Chamois version and I seem to remember the screen wash was in there as well in a very small flattish squishy bag.
The newish S5 Morgan has a similar fuelling arrangement I believe.
