Stewart, without wanting to be a bean counter, there is probably this difference between gloss and deepness. (I know, I just have to experience it myself). Gloss can look cheap if it looks like a mirror and blocks a full deep color away.
Gloss, or better shine, as you probably mean it, can also be an expression of that certain something, a depth that can often only be achieved with the best natural wax.
