Frank, I agree absolutely. When batttery disconnected, I start without any problems after 4 months. When battery stays connected (the clock and immobiliser take some mA), I start without problems after 2 months.
A trickel charger is without doubts a good thing, but the need of them is sometimes bit overvalued.
