When touring in a hire car in Northern Spain mid summer many years ago we encountered a severe thunderstorm and pulled over until it past. Several others followed as it was impossible to drive in the huge hailstones followed by torrential rain. Even so I was surprised when we saw the car parked in front had its windscreen smashed

I think it's fair to say that none of the vestigial storm covers in the collection above would have functioned adequately in such conditions.
My only thought is their light weight and compact stowage is attractive when touring long distance. Surely just putting the hood up would be better (and quicker) though
