Thanks for all the reply's. Seems as though as it is a Morgan there are differences. Just from looking a various photos I assumed it was ply underneath the spare wheel but looking at your photo Graham it looks like a piece of sheetmetal. Please could you confirm if it was. I was thinking that the wood/metal cover protected the fuel gauge sender unit and top of the fuel tank from being flooded so not likely to be present with a disc wheel spare.

. It's probably a crash requirement, my 79 +8 had the same. Haven't taken the spare off the 4/4 to have a look yet.
