Like it or not, the price of a (short term?) peace in northern ireland was the appeasement of the IRA. The government took the view that if this involved sacrificing a few squaddies, then so be it.
In every war of this type, we have eventually had to deal with the terrorists whether people like Mugabe or Kenyatta or the Israelis or the Malaysians and for that matter the yanks.
