All the guides on my very recent Ireland tour made it very clear - be extremely careful if you get involved in a discussion on politics or RELIGION.

"One man one vote" is a hot topic here and look out if you mention the famine.


I have deleted a longer reply on the topic but still maintain that RELIGION as such is just the subject that is used to emphasise the differences more than the true reason for those differences.


Thank you Peter but could I ask what you consider those "true" non religious differences are/were ?

Would you consider the "Penal Laws", The "Ascendancy Rule" had significant religious impact in Ireland and was Section 5(2) of the Government of Ireland Act 1920 which stated:

"Any existing enactment by which any penalty, disadvantage, or disability is imposed on account of religious belief or on a member of any religious order as such shall ... cease to have effect in Ireland" - unnecessary?

I am not trying to provoke, just understand.
