I move the back of the seats forward to create a tent out of the tonneau. Water accumulates in back of the zipper. By pulling the front off and folding the tonneau as I go the water gets dumped over the back. BTW: I have the tonneau nade of Sunbrella. The same as My Bimini Top. So double protection for a Summer storm. When it gets dirty just pop it in the Wash Machine but air dry it. Sunbrella does chafe. I just patch it and replace it when necessary. A Lady I know does Marine Canvas and She does the work and I pay.
