Probably stupid question of the day , but here goes :

I have read a number of times of people re aligning the steering wheel by slackening off the steering UV joint just above the steering box.
My wheel alignment is a little out and has been bugging me a while, so today I thought i would have a go.
Slackened off the nut on the UV fully so it is no longer clamping to steering box spindle -but I cant rotate the joint to steering box spindle at all , it is still fully clamped by the UV piece so the splines are still engaged.
I considered trying to widen the UV - but it looks like a cast peice so might fracture, or a best I could weaken it.

What am I missing?
