After much faffing around I found the right sized screwdriver head and then found the screwdriver handle was not working, a ratchet style handle that now seems to only want to screw things in and will just spin in the “lock” or “undo” position. More ferreting around found a suitable substitute handle and the over riders came off.

Those lower rear overrider screws are described as socket button M6 x 20 in the parts manual. It seems in recent years MMC have been fitting cross head screws though, requiring very short screwdriver, so poor purchase. When I finally got mine off I replaced with stainless socket button screws allowing simple removal with allen key.
