Best wishes for a speedy recovery - apparently the liver has remarkable self-healing properties if damage is caught in time. Well done for joining her in the alcohol-free zone . When I was working a number of colleagues said they were only moderate drinkers and then said that they would have a bottle of wine each eveningbetween two and then a couple of shorts to help relax. It is strange what people consider moderate. I had to go for my BP check-up last week and was asked how many units I drank in a week and worked it out to between 3 and six units per week which the nurse said was fine. I may have a beer or good cider with Sunday lunch, I may have a glass of wine once in a while and a single may once per week in the evening with cheese & cracker - a bottle of Laphroaigh will last me several months so I don't consider myself a heavy drinker at all - but what I do drink is generally good quality (except for wine which I cannot tell the difference between Aldi and the £20 stuff). Luckily SWMBO has always been tee-total and so I am never tempted to drive even after only a pint.
All the best Peter & Caroline and best wishes for a speedy return to health .A colleague had Weil`s disease which attacked his liver and he was told he would be lucky to survive- he gave up drinking completely and now has the very occasional beer and is still with us in good health 30 years later.
