I'm not having a go here, I'm genuinely interested. In English English, the term Spanner is used for a tool which is used on fasteners (ie nuts and bolts), whereas the term Wrench is used for a tool which is used on pipe fittings and the like. Is there no distinction made between these two tool types in American English?
