So far as I know, when the Trads changed from six leaf springs to four, and when the U bolts increased in diameter, the axle was repositioned to the rear.
My 2005 Roadster has the axle forward, but it doesn't bother me. I believe the changes took place around 2006.
The change is later than that, nearer 2008 I think
Most likely when they switched to having the leaf springs made by GME in Coventry
