So far as I know, when the Trads changed from six leaf springs to four, and when the U bolts increased in diameter, the axle was repositioned to the rear.
My 2005 Roadster has the axle forward, but it doesn't bother me. I believe the changes took place around 2006.

Just to confuse things even more my late 99 4/4 has 5 leaf springs, still with a very offset axle position.
I keep thinking of using the spacers to move it central under the arch.
