Good to know 2014 is they key year for when the factory sorted some of the big issues, but that a well sorted earlier car is viable. And you've confirmed my suspicions that a well used car might be a safer bet as any issues are more likely to have already surfaced. I will buy on condition and history rather than age or mileage.

Are there any particular options I should be looking for that make the car easier to live with?

Will heed the advice on keeping it outside. It sounds like it's possible but not the best idea. I think I'll investigate renting a garage nearby, but not sure I'll be able to get one I can easily walk to. I did consider a carcoon before but I thought they were held down under the car's wheels, so a 3 wheeler won't be compatible. Has anyone used a carcoon with an M3W? If it works that might be my best bet.
