I have a Sony Radio/Compact disk player fitted to my 4/4, the disk player is useless as the slightest bump sends the disk haywire but I do find the radio helpful or would if it worked properly. The problem is maintaining a reasonable signal even with the RDS switched on it cannot maintain a signal unlike the radios fitted to our other vehicles, the radio is connected to a factory fitted external aerial which I assume is not up to the job even when fully extended.
I would be loathed to fit another external aerial so am thinking of trying some form of discrete aerial so would welcome any advice

A few suggestions Chris. If your radio has an RDS display the AF function needs to be turned on to allow automatic tracking of strongest signal.
Weak FM station reception can benefit from selecting Mono mode altough you will loose the stereo effect.
If you still have issues how about an
FM/AM signal booster. These inexpensive active devices require a switched 12v positive feed. Your car radio power loom will likely have a radio aerial extension feed ideal for this. Look for redundant yellow cable.
