Well, I finally did it. I took off the steering wheel and wrapped it with 3/16" stretchable cotton clothesline. It is very comfortable to the hand. It worked great. I will post a picture. It was easier than I thought to take the wheel off. I took off the bolt with a wrench and a towel so not to mar the chrome, then jiggled the wheel for about 3 minutes until it finally broke loose and came off. It is an amazingly tight fit on the grooved shaft. I fell back only 6 inches or so. LOL.
