I can't say I have seen those exotic cages in HK and China, usually cages with frogs, chickens, and ducks
I started doing business in China over 25 years ago, was stationed in Hong Kong back in the 70s and have done business there since the early 90s. It all depends where you go and how far off the beaten path you want to stray, but the treatment of animals is awful especially the way they are bred, caught, kept and slaughtered.
