If I was you, to open/close the glove box I would use a snap clasp (is this how you call it in English? Sorry it's not my mothertongue so some technical words may not be a right Translation!) instead of your knurled knob.
Just like this picture, but the part on the dahsboard shall not be fixed with it's counterpart but via a screw into the dashboard's female thread, which is easy and quite common. I mean you won't need the part shown at the bottom of the picture. You just have to find the proper screw with a flat enough head. Shouldn't be difficult.

To make the opening easier, let me suggest you to insert a fabric or very thin leather loop while fixing the snap clasp of the glove box cover, so you can use to pull.
