I understand it to have been a legal requirement for a great number of years it's to cut the fuel supply in the event of an impact to cease fuelling a possible fire situation. They are sited in my experience under the bonnet on the passenger side near the firewall and are around 2" square with two electrical connections and the front of the switch has a rubber covered reset button.
