Yes the 2 second rule is what I was taught decades ago and still use. Start of this year on a highway near me they painted chevrons on the road at a distance that they are one second apart at the speed limit with signs saying keep two chevrons between you and the car in front.
The other less known rule I was taught is the 5 second rule which is if you can't see the road for more than 5 seconds ahead then slow down and be prepared for potential hazards.
