Somewhat animated by the jazz pieces here, in the free section with Ornette Coleman, I come across more traditional jazz. One of my songs for the island is the original recording of "Good Bye Pork Pie Hat" by Charles Mingus in 1959, which Mingus wrote when he learned of the death of Lester Young, who always wore such hats. Although John Handy's sax solo is very respectful of the fact that it doesn't play Lester Young, I consider it one of the most beautiful solos in the recording history of jazz. The solo is so fitting to the song that Joni Mitchel memorized this spontaneously created sequence of notes for her 1979 cover version...also a respectful homage. Unfortunately I only have audio recordings here, but it's may be interesting for some, listening to both solos and comparing them. Both are great in their own way. The first one as a jazz improvisation, the second one by Joni Mitchell as a lecture song.
And...if someone knows blues but not jazz, this song is a bridge you can build. Someone once said as a definition which I really like... (Real) jazz is blues that went to college.
