That was the question I asked? All I could think of was it’s to provide a smooth surface for ones left shoe to slide along and protect the leather on the transmission cover.
Seems a bit overkill but it certainly works as the car is a delight to drive and as I drive in Makusonni and Speceretti designer driving footwear (some call them Moccasin slippers) the clutch action is very smooth.
