WARNING: Potentially Misplaced Optimism

Evening all,
When all this COVID inconvenience etc goes away, I think I should push myself and travel abroad in the Morgan.
First on the list for me is the Memorial at Cambrai, the route looks straight forward for a novice and I shouldnt have many issues, apart from my non-existant French and remembering to drive on the 'wrong' side of the road (hopefully)
However, I cannot get the hang of how the Autoroutes and the tolls etc work, it looks very complicated to me? I have visions of causing a tailback and massive inconvenience at a booth! It's a bit off-putting as a large part of the route would involve these unless I go cross-country.
Can any of the more seasoned continental drivers enlighten me?
Thanks in advance.
