Pure bling and a threat to paintwork. Your bonnet will not fly up if fastened correctly. This may not have been the case 70 years ago however.
Agree with your first comment but my one month old car did have the drivers side bonnet lift whilst overtaking on a breezy M6. Amazed no damage as it appeared to just levitate until I had chance to pull over. Door checkstrap pin bent shortly after though when I came to rest on hard shoulder and had the door ripped out of my hand by gusts from passing trucks - twice!
KH adjusted front bonnet lock and replaced pin under warranty - no trouble since
