I used the Portsmouth-Santander ferry twice, first time in 2014, when I went to Malvern to collect the M3W (on the way back, Portugal-UK was by plane obviously). Second time in 2015, with the Plus 4, when we attended TOTH (at Shelsley Walsh). This time we travelled by ferry in both directions.
In both occasions I found the ferry an excellent way of travelling. We basically traveled during the night so it was a nice way to be on the move even when sleeping. And we found the rooms we used to be clean and proper, the staff was nice, the services and food weren't "michelin" level but good nevertheless. Have no complaints whatsoever.
I think that, unless you really want to visit or know some of what France has to offer (as I did when I picked the Plus 4 in 2010, we drove all the way back to Portugal and we took our time to know many beautiful french locations on the way), the ferry is the best way to travel between the UK and any of the "Peninsular countries"
