I think it is part of the design aesthetic, i.e. it is to
'show off' the aluminium chassis underpinnings.
The construction was pretty innovative for cars in general and certainly for MMC when introduced ......
I'm guessing there is no reason why you couldn't cover it with leather if that is your choice (except you will probably upset the
'traditionalists' 
!)
