One trick that I observed Kevin Vernon use to good effect was to go round the flange with a small hammer, making lots of light taps (Quite quickly, say 120bpm, imagine you're conducting Hall of the Mountain King by Grieg) in a radial direction to break the seal betwixt silencer and pipe. Not too hard, you don't want to distort anything. I think it's the vibrations that do the work.
