I believe these switches aren’t very reliable, as an alternative has anyone tried mounting a micro switch off the brake pedal?

Here is the part you requested Dave.
Slaving a relay will remove the current factor from the hydraulic switch as John suggests, this makes them far less prone to failure.

I have never had a failure on either of my Plus 8's in about 50,000mls and 11 years to put things in perspective for you.

I would recommend avoiding adding the complexity of a relay to this safety critical circuit which will increase potential for unreliability. As John V6 suggests his failed even with low current LED brake lights so better to source a quality replacement switch.

You pay your money and take your choices is how I view it with my experience with them and slaving relays is a very common practise.

I had the pedal mounted micro switch fail on my 2009 4/4 Sport at 10,000mls so neither system is failsafe without getting carried away.
