The hood release mechanism seemed to be getting more and more reluctant to undo when lowering the hood or or just stowing the shopping. Pulling harder and harder on the release handle seemed like a recipe for disaster, "something's going to break". So on the basis of Do A Job Properly, off came the spare wheel/cover and luggage rack, and by lubricating the universal joint on my neck I could see what the problem was. It is a simple two-part sliding latch, and it appeared the mechanism had not been greased since leaving the factory 12 years ago. Some WD40 and then some proper spray white grease has sorted it, and it now releases with a nice "click". Just remember to push down on the rear hood rail when pulling the release handle.
