For those who are within reach of Nottingham, the Industrial Museum in Wollaton Park has a collection of Brough Superior motorcycles together with one of the cars. They also have machines from Raleigh (as you would expect). The museum is open on Saturdays and Sundays although groups can visit on weekdays by arrangement. There is also a magnificent beam engine (which is in steam a few days a year) and a Strowger telephone exchange. The collection of lace making machines is also worth a look - at least one has a card system for programming. And since Ada Lovelace first suggested the use of Jacquard cards as a means to programme a Babbage Difference Engine, it could make Nottingham the birthplace of computing .....
