I am Greek by birth and it was custom to throw money inside a car that one just purchased. It would range from coins to sometimes paper. The premise is one of good luck and because the car has money, it won't need money from the owner to have something fixed.
I tended swap cars often which then had family members tell me that if I needed money I should ask vs buying another car and waiting with the door open
