Basketball was invented in 1891 and for over 20 years, ladders and poles were used to retrieve the ball after scoring. It wasn't until 1912 that somebody thought of cutting the bottom off the net.
A wonderful story and It shows that mankind is capable of incisive innovative developments in the long term.
