Mick, I would suggest you get a copy of Rover Gauge and the correct lead. Think they’re about £35 from eBay. It’s really the only way to interrogate your ecu and will help identify problems. It works on a windows pc platform and is a bit ‘clunky’ but better that stabbing in the dark.

You also gat an indication of fault codes and can clear them too. Here an old screen shot of mine.

I keep my lead connected and tucked up out of the way - easier than trying to connect it as access isn’t too easy.
