Hi Sensel. I have a 1974 RHD Plus 8 and it had similar problems selecting gears. I took the gearbox cover off, a bit of a pain getting it to go over the gearstick, handbrake lever and under the dash but with bit of fiddling I got it out.
I then took off the selector unit and found all bushes were worn or non-existent, I replaced the shaft bushes, available from eBay and replaced anything else I could see, also there is a nylon type gear lever sealing bush that the ball of the gearlever rotates in , mine had disintegrated, you can still change gear but if it is missing, the gearlever will be all sloppy. Again I think these are still available on eBay
I changed the oil to Automatic transmission fluid (ATF) . After doing all this, the gear selection was transformed or it was until the car warmed up, then changing gear started to get a bit sticky, this was until I realized I needed to put my foot down further on the clutch peddle there is probably not much left of my clutch! but all’s well at the moment. So I am happy.
I haven’t experienced any play in the transmission but I would first look at the 2 universal joints for play and while you’re in that area the rear suspension. Hope this is of some help.
