I will postulate another possible cause if the cap breather is not the root cause.
Some electrical components, usually coil , or capacitor in the distributor , or the ballast resistor (hidden in the wiring usually for a 1970s 4/4) , may be breaking down after use for a period. After cooling down they will function as normal again until the next occasion.
