Thanks for your suggestions - 5 breakdowns later I got home. I opened the fuel cap, there wasn't an instant start, but I had a feeling it helped - overall, it started fine each time after waiting between 20 and 40 minutes, at least it's home and I can dwell on the issue at my leisure. Each breakdown was announced by a series of jerks and farts - the car, not me.
