Not exactly mandatory, lots of bikers manage with less. You will notice that one car is travelling light on this photo from our recent 18 day trip to Spain. We were two up and had enough to keep us going without the need for a rack, it just takes a bit of planning. Much less time packing and unpacking, easy to refuel.
. If only we could put a big bag in there! But still I can't see how to do 15 days without the luggage rack...
