This is something that has puzzled me for a while - surely the transformer doesn't have any concept of direction, only step up/down. So how would it know it was in reverse? Just curious....

Primary and secondary windings become reversed reducing transformer efficiency Dave. I'm guessing there are a multitude of other negatives in general power distribution as well since the network was designed to provide power in just the one direction.
