Perhaps we need to redefine our definition of 'better off' .... if it remains defined as 'bigger house ... bigger car ....bigger everything' then that is obviously not going to happen as it's totally unsustainable .... and the 'post-boomers' with their strong focus on 'climate-catastrophy' and the environment (not to mention social-justice ) will be the first to acknowledge this. You can have a pleasantly habitable planet or 'more stuff' but not both.

PS I will add that in spite of being a 'boomer' (and I have plenty of concerns about the way that term is glibly used to denigrate and diminish a diverse and progressive generation) I have never bought in to the above definition of 'better off' or pursued the 'dream' .... and not likely to change now 🙂
I would think to be "better off" is confined to basic standards of living and not bigger everything. There are millions who would settle for a home of modest proportions. I am still reeling from the suggestion earlier in this thread that the housing shortage is exaggerated and the poster used unsold new housing as an example to back up the claim!
