Holy thread resurrection!
So my bottom shock mounts have failed. And we are on holiday driving through Devon and Cornwall.
A few day before we left i fitted the spring assists - bump stops- and glad I did. Yesterday, just after coming off the Torpoint ferry I heard an ‘odd’ noise. And then a few miles later a metal on metal screeching from the right rear which then stopped. Now 10 miles from Looe I carried on with care as the brakes felt ok and application didn’t re-introduce the noise.
Quick google search found an independent garage in Looe that closed at 5.30pm. We got there just after 5!
Chap was reluctant to start looking so late in the day but when he realised we were on holiday and still had a way to go to our evening stop he agreed to take a look. Initially when removing the drum or looked like one of the drive shaft bolts had failed as there was a loose nut. But closer inspection revealed the offside rear shock bracket had failed completely and the near side was close to failing
Well the chap scratched hi head and then said he could use the non failed side as a template to weld a temporary repair to the failed bracket and also repair/strengthen the other side
3 hours later we were back on the road with the advice to get the brackets changed as a soon as we can. Well the car is booked in to New elms as soon as we get back
But what a result from a proper old school garage
And the cost? 3 hours at normal Labour rates. £195 plus £15 for parts!!! At 8.30 pm
