In the GDI installation the engine is vertical as opposed to the 10 deg slant that it's in in the Mx5.

I think the same as my Frontline MGB where the engine drain plug is not at the bottom of the engine due to the engine and gearbox being 100% vertical rather than on a 10% slant like the donor MX5. While draining my oil I jack up each corner of the car, take the wheels off and clean them, that allows the oil to flow out of lots of cavities. Leave it overnight with the front passenger side jacked up so the drain plug is at the lowest possible part of the sump. Next morning put the cleaned wheel back on, put the drain plug back in, new filter and then lower the car and put oil in it. I get about 600ml more oil in the drain pan overnight.
