DaveW, Whilst some of the oil on the backs of the valves will come from the breather some will also come down the valve guides, IMHO.

Totally agree John, in fact a significant amount of oil residue is likely to arrive that way. With low mileage engines, the crankcase won't be "pressurised", but the oil droplets will get sucked through, although my breather wasn't oily at all.
We're stuck with this design fault, and I suppose all we can do is use decent oil, and keep an eye on it.
