Instead of a cove plate maybe a little box that screws in ... seems a pity to waste a potential storage space for sunglasses and gloves 🙂

You are right
You can never have enough storage space for towels etc.
That is why I have already made new door plates with storage compartments and an elastic pocket on the tunnel trim!
But now I'm planning to screw on a USB socket for my smartphones with navigation app.
I think the existing radio plug with matching adapter is well suited for that, because the cable could stay there.
Besides, I don't like to change things that I can't restore to their original state.
