My understanding is that if you want to upload your image to the TM main site then it does need to be of the right size (100x100) and extension.
TM does allow you to use a link to an external site where it can also be larger than 100x100 and TM then renders it into the correct display size for your avatar.
This is what I have done for mine in the past.
Saved to TM-IMG in full size as a suitable format (jpg, gif etc) but larger size still.
Got the full link from TM-IMG as outlined above.
Put it into the TM avatar using the link option.
This seems to allow good quality images to render and I hope it does not slow down the pages rendering etc.
p.s. Nice Toad in the hole - gonna need a good onion gravy.
