Here in Italy most calls are made using caller number spoofing. They seem to use robots that continually call a sequence of mobile (or landline) numbers to build up a bank of numbers not currently in use. The result is that they fake in the number for a few hours until various call blocking services pick it up and then switch to another number. If you try to call back the telecom responds with a message to say the number is not in use.
Very annoying as it pretty much hides the actual caller.
